So 1540 is the first client to feature native windows SDK code.

Specifically to interrogate ATI/AMD cards and sort out vram. More so I have spent a good while actually looking at AMD GPU native driver calls and altered the client to make specific calls to ATI based hardware where applicable. This is based on research into the RX500 series and above.

And as a final hurrah for all users this client will access 8gb+ of system ram ( if applicable ) and will if given the legs in advanced graphics settings use a combined 2 gigs of texture ram a further 1 gig for bound textures and enhanced FBO code, resulting in about 2.7GB to 4GB of vram usage before discards or swaps.

Like all my tests this is to be taken with a HUGE pinch of care, as we are doing things that go on a BIG excursion from the norm. But this was never about being your everyday viewer, half the fun is pushing certain limits or altering things and see what sticks.

Anyway for the hardware prodders , test build is on the SVN as always ... CLEAR your local cache!

Much Love,

KL
Kirstenleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13413036809896085161noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2321449350052634147.post-88792067413860278122021-03-02T00:21:00.000+01:002021-03-02T00:21:28.795+01:00SVN snapshot 1533

The burst of activity should ease somewhat as the code reaches a more mature level so Valkyrie moves to a much more presentable prospect. Display names work and feed and browser based elements including maturity checks now work properly again.

This is partly due to the viewers code shifting after many years to the newer standards for client identification, so as I zero in on the final finishing touches expect more UI alterations and the focus switching back to features again. One aspect of this bout of activity is the dropping of all Linux /Solaris/ and OSX based code.

Why would I do such a thing? Its simply the realisation that keeping this thing maintained takes time, which is a rare commodity and focusing on a pure windows based solution without sifting through endless defines and endif's not to mention the triple whammy cmake files or anything else for that matter makes life a heck of a lot simpler besides I do actually remember when the source came as a visual studio 2003 solution.

It does in some ways free up some possible alternate ways to build including dropping the need for some third party support libraries which can more simply be added to and integrated into the VS environment, this could possibly include python and cmake, culling thousands of lines with platform specific differences has been an interesting experiment.

To be sure the reverse holds true and I do ponder just how good a pure Nix based solution could be!

The other side effect of this is in simplification and distillation of the code more serious modifications become slightly less onerous such as render... lets just see where this goes :)

Regards,

KL
Kirstenleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13413036809896085161noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2321449350052634147.post-63029335453880628152021-02-27T20:51:00.001+01:002021-02-27T20:51:49.884+01:00S23 codename: Valkyrie

So at some point I wanted to issue a cheeky SVN snapshot build, question was at what point was a good place?

The default viewer has had over a 100 commits and ++1000's of changes literally tons and tons of code has altered to support Visual Studio 2017 and beyond, major libraries such as boost and the whole physics backend had to be re-compiled. Not my strong point :)

I digress.... to business! Early snap of the next client iteration looking at about March time. As you can see the UI is sporting a blast from the past which is the Midnight UI from S21.

Fundamentally this release is all about housekeeping removing swathes of code relating to Solaris! And ancient functions for Altivec (PowerPC) yep its all in there! This has meant over the years the code has ballooned and for my own sanity and better readability this stuff is getting seriously culled.

Consequently this has also had a desirable upside in lots of backwater code gets visited with small improvements and alterations the hope is to release a very very solid, stable and from initial findings better performing beast.

That's about where we are at, so stay safe be well and let you know when release time comes.

Toodles! This is a cautionary tale for those of us in this world who elect to construct our own PC's.

So the time comes to renew or update the rig's when suddenly the main mechanical drive used for mass storage decides to start clunking (yikes), One Ebay later and much cursing and back in business with a new seagate barracuda, disaster averted. So having looked in the machines I start pondering what needs updating... Ram! The Intel rig is in need of some TLC, and what the heck lets update the GPU's and refresh the systems.

And so the problems start...... Intel from 8K series to 9K, ram speed up and 32GB from 20. And a 1060 out in favour for a 2060. Each part caused pain in no small part because the quality 500watt PSU decided the startup current demanded was a tad too much.

Sighs ( replace psu ) the moral I guess is be cautious when changing out components as power requirements may change.

So to the AMD system this has a overkill PSU so no issues here (it was SLI originally) this time Ryzen decides it hates corsair ram made by Samsung, my only guess is the kit is rank 2 not rank 1 modules. So we swap around the modules and the Intel rig gets the B-Die and I revert to the SK-Hynix branded modules.

The GPU is lovely..... but its also an OVEN! Working temps can hit over 100 degrees. ( I'm assured this is OK and within tolerances )

Downside is even in my airy case the internals also start to cook, so shopping again for beefier cooling solutions. This is where the real fun begins... currently I write this on an emergency PC as I stare at a broken CPU.. awaiting delivery of a new one........

So all in all not a great week, never forget the wisdom that even with the best executed plans the universe will find a way to ruin said plans !

Anyway hopefully the dust settles and normal service resumes.

Regards, stressed KL

Kirstenleehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13413036809896085161noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2321449350052634147.post-40409206385253786482020-05-17T21:11:00.001+02:002020-05-17T21:12:44.572+02:00Build Snapshot 1416 (codename SULACO)

Skye Galaxy Concert :)

Much more subtle releases now as I concentrate on specific areas, nevertheless this build has seriously improved handling of impostor code, and name-tag text.

And the incremental tweaks continue both in upstream patching and UI enhancements.

Silly things like semi transparent menus on context menus which seem insignificant but add so much to the look and feel. So this is one request that is not my usual thing but considering that it potentially means less scripted attachments then what the heck! So Build 1387 includes the client side AO originally from Firestorm.

As you can well expect shoehorning it into 6.4.1 code was fraught with issues, anyway on top of this feature the client now has all the upstream patches I could sensibly select, from diverse branches 501,508,510 and anything in-between

All in all this is looking quite tidy, my attention will probably turn towards more traditional themes with some attention heading towards the render and camera.

:)

For now stay safe!

Stay SANE!

Love,

KL

When in the TPV I mention the word hybrid it means exactly that. I have a singular obsession and that is to trawl for anything that A) improves performance and B) improves stability.
So build 1372 is released in the wild with a hybrid profile setup based in the majority from a LL project viewer with some nice to haves from other sources such as alchemy and firestorm.

This is a very incremental approach, the absolute best thing about producing a client is the freedom to choose, some things I like other bits not so much.

Anyway in the best tradition of Kirsten, I have packed the current snapshot for some playtime over the forthcoming weekend, remember to clear caches and settings! see my YouTube video if your new to this! Also mentioned in the TPV listing is the requirement that a user has the knowledge of how this works :)

Anyway for virtual world aficionados feel free, hit the download button and please let me know if you like my approach (or not). I can not promise a response but occasionally impassioned requests such as 3D fall on a hard developers heart and things do happen :)

Much love and respect,

So if you follow the Sourceforge Page you will see a new build 1368 things are starting to really dial in. Perhaps I should explain a little about the viewer nuts and bolts.

I do not use the linden auto build system. I host all the build libraries because I occasionally work on those in concert with the viewer code. It allows for much finer control over the entire process. I have a tendency to do custom compilations with different tool-sets which is something an official client would never do, for reasons of the broadest compatibility with the consumer.

It is a choice that I only build for windows, the added time would be overwhelming, besides to be fair I would rather do one platform moderately well than dilute the results trying to juggle many.

I tend as a rule to keep any feature or alteration within the existing code base and not add extras which cannot be integrated into the standard source. I also use LL code style and naming conventions.

And most crucially all changes are based on a personal preference :) hence why its called Kirsten's viewer!

So that is a little about the viewer for those of you who are curious perhaps some factoids about me!

How and when did I join SL?

In 2003/4 was doing research for work on AI networks to control electrical power distribution systems in critical environments, came across an article about AI in a 3D simulation by a gent called Phillip Rosedale, paid the $9.95 stuck around :)

Why a female avatar?

Way back when the default AV was female, did not realize you could actually alter that default!
Spent cash making the best of it and looking tastefully designed. And stuck with it fun fact: my shape has not altered much since 2005!

Are you a Linden?

NO ! ( although I did apply for a QA position and have interviews back in the day )

Why are you doing the viewer again?

Its a matter of public record as to how development ended, a perfect storm of circumstances made continued work on it impossible.
But as with all things time is a great healer. Besides after nearly 16 years of SL I find myself enjoying my in world life. And have the luxury of a good work balance and a happy and healthy home.

So while the sun shines make hay :)

Anyway Stay Safe,

Much Love and Best Wishes,

A very eventful week!

The code base has changed very significantly , this has meant quite a bit of work. So for your viewing pleasure I have built out snapshot build 1360 it has proved to be very challenging as the render pipeline has altered in some quite fundamental ways.

I have noticed on my AMD powered rig a not too unnoticeable improvement in frame rates. Unfortunately legacy profiles had to be disabled .. for now, as the effort went into re-integrating 3D.
So this viewer uses LL version 6.4.1 as the core which of course includes the much talked about EEP.

In other news Kirsten's has re-introduced itself to the official TPV list. So one of the oldest TPV,s circa 2008 makes a welcome return :) in 2020!

So this client forms the basis of the future development of my everyday runner.

I do hope you will enjoy the experiment and come along for the ride.

Warm Wishes,
Greetings all, after much gnashing of teeth and wailing. The client is now available in a 64bit variant.

It is not currently the default download, as its still not as mature as the 32bit version and has to make a few concessions as I have not had time to fully tweak the libraries it uses.
However it may be better in heavy sims as it can address more memory, which is technically a limitation of the 32bit variation. And absolutely nothing to do with rampant uncontrolled meshy avatars and excessive triangle counts :)

You can grab the build here from the link or navigate to the files section of my sourceforge page.

S22-6.22.1291-x64.exe

Anyway feel free to experiment, remember to clear caches as this can cause conflict if a previous version is installed!

Much Love,

Build 1300 - Digital Rage Sky :)

This release is technically an improved version of 1290, many thanks to Austin Tate for the generous review and heads up to a few issues. A crash if the 3D is enabled on logoff and some nasty render glitches caused by water reflections. Both happy to say are fixed.

As above you can see the custom skies added to windlight giving a Tron like feel to the grid :)

Also added some typical Kirsten features, improved mouse controls in move and view, quick access to anaglyph from graphics options, UI improvements with more alpha and sub-pixel highlights on some elements, along with a barrage of minor tweaks and some serious compiler optimizing to boot.

It has always been the case that this client was for personal use but shared with anyone who cares to download it, I hope you enjoy.

I wonder what will take my fancy next?

Much Love,

So after a few weeks of tinkering it gives me great pleasure to release build 1290!

For those of you with red/cyan glasses the above screenshot will make perfect sense :)
The code for this has been completely re-written the reason for this is simple, the effect is the system now renders at native frame rates! Previously each eye had to render the entire scene and required viewer display having duplicate coding resulting in quite a performance hit. The system is now integrated much more elegantly and some selected components only render on alternate frames.

Atmospheric shaders work in anaglyph ( sorry no deferred option.. yet)

Also in this build are the inclusion of custom cloud files to add some variation to windlight.
And the ability to vary hovertext distance and visibility in the client.

Of course the viewer has all the latest Linden Lab features and has code both from release and experimental branches folded into the mix.

As always the client should be treated as an eternal Beta so your mileage may vary :)

Anyway I hope you enjoy this release have fun and stay safe.

Lots of Love,

Well it may come as no surprise that we all have a little time on our hands...reasons :)

So taking this opportunity to do a little housekeeping. I admit I underestimated quite how much work was needed to take the V5 version of my client and bring it up-to the latest specs.

Anyway the plan is something like follows, I have made the conscious decision to keep the code 32bit. That way it will run on a wide variety of potatoes, besides I see no overarching technical reason to jump to 64bit. The viewer has had most of its major libraries upgraded and the code base has jumped to 6.3.9 with the inclusion of some experimental elements yet to appear on the grid.

How much I toy with this is unknown, I have a few thoughts on what to do which may include some serious UI overhaul, perhaps a texture decode overhaul, possibly some 3D or graphical stuff.
I must admit the thought of a conversion to vulkan intrigues me.

As is always the case the output of all of this should be considered alpha/beta at best, I freely admit that the insights found when trawling a 3 way merge of yet to be released code is amusing and very time consuming.

That's all for now stay frosty!

Love,KL
Apple have Time-machine which is really nifty and this can to a certain degree be emulated on Windows with a cost (usually).

But that's not what Kay is about! My want's was an incremental/differential backup tool which activates on a change to a directory and does the business. And did I mention is Free....

OK before I get roasted YES I KNOW it's not the purpose for which it's intended, however....

It happens I have a couple of unused licenses so here are my thoughts on the topic of using a server OS as a everyday desktop system.

I am very much in the school that less is more and rather than give you some long winded blurb I'm gonna break this down to plus and minus points with a conclusion.

Lets start with the negatives..

1) Cost! 100's rather than 10's, also bear in mind the system is licensed on Cores, got a range topping i7 or Ryzan and you will certainly hit the limits (16 cores per license).

2) Technicality, You need to KNOW what the hell your doing! (Installation/Configuring) Enough said.

3) LTSB ( this is either a plus or a minus ) but don't expect sweeping feature updates every few months

Now the Positives ( My take )

1) SECURITY!!! by default this baby is designed to be Locked down tight! You cannot disable enhanced defender, no unnecessary services are running, you have to start a few! For the truly paranoid you can add Immunet (Free) or Malwarebytes to supplement defender. But check out the latest Real world tests for defender its pretty solid.

2) Privacy, local account, passworded. No location , no Cortana, everything turned OFF by default.

3) Boot time.. Blistering

4) Dross (No Store,No Candy Crush in fact no extra crap at all).

5) Memory usage better!

6) Gaming... this is not a placebo effect as some have mentioned from my limited testing BF1 (DX11 & 12) loaded significantly faster and latency was a few milliseconds down, frame rates identical to Win 10.

7) Windows update - NO automatic crap, it asks me IF I wish to download and IF I wish to install, thank you windows may I be in charge for a while.

This OS once dialed in and configured correctly feels like a modern windows 7 on steroids.

Now a final word as mentioned this is really really a stupid thing to do, its expensive, technical and not what it was designed for..but its lovely :)

Hugs, KL
