S17 Info and setup guide.

This Blog Post is Just to answer often repeated questions S17 differs from previous versions in several ways. To setup shadows you DO NOT need to go into debug settings anymore.
The Picture above shows the checkboxes in the preferences.
You will need graphics cards capable of shader model 3, a geforce 7000 series will not work.
As a bare working minimum you will need a 8800 ( 8600's are not going to cut it! )
Or if on ATI a 3850 is a bare minimum.
Be careful cards like 9500's are rebadged lower spec cards.
For Best results 9800's or better or 4800 ATI's
Drivers are another issue 64bit drivers may vary wildly from 32bit counterparts.
ATI cat drivers 8.12 are known to work
Nvidia 182.50 WHQL are known to work
Nvida 185.63 betas are known to work
Experiences may vary from person to person, some may see tree shadows some may not
Some may not see there avatars shadow some do.
By all means give feedback :) not looking for bugs here looking for positive info! what setups work what don't etc etc.
And of course this is NOT RC material ... but i will always work to mitigate as many issues as possible.
Best Regards KL

OMG! thats all ive got to say! well ok ill add a bit.. ive been on sl for about a year, tryed quite a few different clients and this one by far is performing the best for me! might i add the skins the best ive seen on a sl client yet! this will defiantly be my standard client as of now, it squeezes a good 20 xtra frames out of my 9600's in sli running on xp and user created version of dx10, Shadows are awesome, hurt the fps a lil but duh, would have really really liked to see them cast shadows from my avatar because id planned on using it for photos but thats my luck lol, they cast everywhere else and make everything look alot more realistic! Huge Kudo's! .. makes me wonder why u dont work for ll seems as if they could use your help bigtime! thanx for reading my post and hope you can cope with the fact i couldn't properly structure a sentence or paragraph if my life depended on it xD

Some users have noted that doing a rebake ctrl-alt-R will force the avatar to cast a shadow (for photographic purposes ), thanks for the feedback from lindsay inworld on that point :)
And thankyou for the kind words you guys all rock!

Just wanted to report a bug....

Right-click on a HUD object gets only the right-click pie menu that you'd get if you clicked on yourself - i.e., appearance/profile/gestures/friends/etc.

Tried this on a new (2 month old) computer build, with a GeForce 9600 GT and I did not see shadows but I'll come back and see if there are any updated drivers and try again.

I see the anon above had decent results with a 9600 (I only assume it's a Nvidia), but I'm not running a sli set up.

Works good for me ( ATI 4870, i7, 3bg ram winXP)
Although my own shadow doesn't last long, returns when I change clothing, briefly.

One question, any Windlight presets I make, where do they go?? they no longer seem to go in Windlight > Skies and I can't find them anywhere.

i havent tried shadows yet, but i think ifound a bug.. Shaders seem to become unavailable for no apparent reason.

Nice work , but is there a way to make the antialiasing working with shadows ??

This viewer is utterly amazing!
I've only had time for a quick play, but it blew me away!

Currently, I'm not getting full shadows - any layer that has clothing on for some reason blanks out that part of the av's shadow:

Oh dear. I may need to do loads of nudie shots!!!!

I've enabled the shadows in preferences, but I am unable to see any appear. Graphics set to Ultra, and latest drivers for my GeForce 8500 GT 512mb card. I read above that 8800 is minimum, but is this to truly make them work, or merely a performance requirement?

An 8600 has a 50/50 chance of producing a shadow or two, at a few fps. A 8500 with half bus 128bit as opposed to 256 ... even though on paper it meets the specs I would say its near unusable for shadows sorry :(
